WebFinder New Feature Leak in Upcoming ZoomText 10 Screen Magnifier Release

The most popular screen magnifier for Windows, ZoomText from AI Squared, will get release 10 soon. They promote this release by publishing videos with new features on Youtube. Today the Enhanced WebFinder allowing you to search webpages for specific words or phrases, or skim through pages to find items of interest.

As you navigate through the page, each item you come to is highlighted and announced. When an item of interest is found, WebFinder can start reading aloud from that location. If the item is a link to another page, WebFinder can execute the link and you can continue your search on the new page.

This video will introduce you to one of the new features in ZoomText 10, Background Reader. Background reader allows you to listen to documents, webpages, emails, or any text while simultaneously performing other tasks.

This is great for taking notes, or just listening to news articles while you check your email. Background Reader effectively lets you multi-task while listening to text.

BlindSpot: A seeing-eye cane and smartphone concept

Socializing could be a bit easier for the visually impaired with the BlindSpot, a concept by a Singaporean university graduate.

Driven by a focus on the oft-overlooked needs of a small segment of society, Selene Chew wanted to develop something which would improve the social lives of the visually-impaired. She came up with the concept of BlindSpot, which looks like a normal white cane, but packs some rather smart technology on the inside.

Blindspot is a smart white cane that helps visually handicapped people to take on an active role in socializing and venture into places that they do not dared to explore previously. It informs them of a friend or family member nearby and helps to actively meet them. The location of their friends can be abstracted from popular geographical-based social apps such as Foursquare and communicated through the Bluetooth earpiece connected to the cane. Having known that a friend is nearby, they can choose to call them with the earpiece or be guided towards their friends. Their friend's location can be guided by a tactile GPS navigator on the cane handle. It is a horizontally rolling ball that points to the exact direction to walk. Additionally, an in-built ultrasonic sensor helps detect hanging objects and gives forewarning of ground obstacles to the user. This allows visually handicapped people to confidently travel out of their comfort zone and be aware of people they know being around them.

Free Magnifier App Zoom Plus for Android Phones as Alternative for Hardware Video Magnifier Released

It also lets you change the colors and contrast of the text and background, which can help with dyslexia, low vision and color blindness.

Hardware video magnifier devices cost a great deal of money, so to widen the availability of this highly useful technology 232 Studios & Ian Hamilton have released it as an app for Android phones for free.

In this case free means totally free, no advertising, and it will always be totally free. Performance is highly dependent on your device - if you have a higher quality camera and processor you have then the images will be sharper and it will run more smoothly.

Initial public release, a key feature of this app is its simplicity so they aren’t planning on adding extra features. Further development will be bug fixing, performance improvements and enhancing the existing functionality, by for example adding screen-reader support.

The app has the same kind of functionality that you would find on a $500-1500 video magnifier (zoom in/out, high contrast, inverted, yellow on black), and with the addition of blue and yellow dyslexia friendly coloured overlays.

The purpose of it is to open up magnification technology to people who currently find the price prohibitively expensive, so with that in mind, it's completely free.
